2007 AVIS Portal: The Fact Sheet (OIE 2007)
Preventing, managing and responding to high impact animal disease
AVIS: The Advanced Veterinary Information System
PDF-versionMany animal diseases affect society as a whole, not just the immediate animal owners and their communities. Such diseases are regarded by the AVIS community as of “high impact” and are therefore, addressed as High Impact Animal Diseases (HIADs). The effects of such diseases reach across from animal health and welfare into food safety and wider public and environmental health. They also have major social and economic consequences when they occur.
An Expert College and an Online Portal
AVIS is dedicated to the prevention, management and eventual eradication of such high-impact diseases, whether known or emerging. It achieves its goal through a combination of a College of experts, available to assist as needed, and a Portal, an on-line resource of peer-reviewed knowledge and expertise. By these means the overall AVIS objective is met – the provision of affordable, immediately accessible knowledge and expertise, at the point of need. Use AVIS for training, reference, capacity building or day-to-day management of risk.
One World, One Medicine
AVIS College works within a "one world/ one medicine" framework. Hence it operates an equity pricing policy, based on capacity to pay. The College veterinarians and in-house IT staff have long-standing expertise in providing knowledge management and knowledge transfer to stakeholders - owners, producers and veterinarians - but equally to economists, epidemiologists and ethicists. It is global in both its programmes and outreach, with subscribers and users in over 150 countries.
